How to Stand Out in Data Science

Don't Listen to Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan said you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

But you also miss if you’re blindfolded and you have no idea what you’re shooting at.

Because it’s not just the quantity of shots which mater, it’s the quality.

After me and my first girlfriend broke up I tried dating again.

2 years I was out of the game.

It was fucking impossible.

I had no idea what I was doing.

I was sending texts which never got responses.

Dating etiquette was a mystery.

And everything felt so awkward.

So much so that I invested in coaching for help.

It worked wonders.

They got me to stand out by leaning into my interests.

And by teaching me to think about the type of women I wanted to date it made the conversations I had miles more fun.

So my number of shots went down and the quality went up.

A couple of months later I was dating a Russian Influencer from Google – just the 25k insta followers to her name.

The process taught me it’s not just about trying as hard as you can, it’s about standing out and being selective in what you want.

And you can apply the same thing to finding a Data Science Job.

Just like trying to data every girl available didn’t work, applying for every Data Science job doesn’t work.

So first you have to pick where to aim (i.e., the industries you want to work in) and then you have to stand out (by building the right Tailored Projects – if you don’t already have them).

The main thing which determines how much you enjoy a job is the industry you’re in, the company you work for and the problems you solve.

That’s what we’ll focus on here.

Whilst Data Scientist and Analyst roles can be different, the aim of each role is to solve business problems.

And if you don’t enjoy the problems you’re solving, it doesn’t matter if you’re a data analyst or scientist – it will stink.

FYI this is part of the Confident Data Scientist Bible - a shit-tonne of resources I made for my clients.

Let me know what you think!
