How To Plan A Tailored Project

We’ve talked about this before.

Tailored Projects are essential to getting a Data Science jobs.

But you can’t build a good one if you don’t know what you’re working on.

That’s why the planning stage is key.

These are the 4 steps you need to plan a Tailored Project

1. Choose Your Position

Tailored Projects work because they make you fit like a glove for your dream job.

But first you have to work out what your dream data job is.

More specifically, you need to know what industry it’s in.

Are you crunching numbers in high-city Finance?

Do you make things tick in Government?

Or are you working in retail, analysing the latest fashion choices?

Work out what industry you want to work in.

2. Brainstorm Ideas

Now you know what industry you want to work in.

You need to come up with project ideas from that industry.

But not all ideas are created equal.

Some ideas solve problems which previously kept managing directors up at night.

Some ideas are as useful as a tennis racket in a football match.

You need to focus on the first set of ideas.

Find problems in your industry worth solving.

3. Find Data

This is the hardest part.

Not all projects will have the data you want.

For example, anything around customer data is sensitive.

So companies don’t share it.

And there are good sites to get data from - like Kaggle.

But you have to make sure the data

  • Is relevant to your Tailored Projects

  • Has enough observations

  • Has enough Features

Asking ChatGPT can help here too.

But as you saw in my previous post, it can cause problems.

Get high-quality data.

4. Iterate

A current client was getting fixated on one idea.

And while it was class.

It was hard to get data for.

That’s why you need to be adaptable.

When you’re searching data for one idea.

Other ideas might stem.

Or you might find data which isn’t what you wanted.

But would be good for another project.

So don’t get obsessed on finding data for one project.

Be flexible about the Tailored Project you work on.

That’s how you plan a Tailored Project.

The steps are simple.

But if you do anything wrong.

Like pick a problem that’s not important.

Or choose irrelevant data.

You’ll waste MONTHS working on something employers don’t care about.

It’ll make you stand out - but for the wrong reasons.

That’s time you could have spent in a Data Science role with challenging projects.

But instead you’ll still be counting down the time to 5pm.

To go home from your mind-numbing job.

And that’s just the planning stage.

You still need to execute it and productionise it to perfection.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

If you want someone fighting your corner.

Giving you feedback on all your work.

Someone who knows what a great Data Science project looks like.

So you don’t waste time on a bad one.

I’m about to open the doors to my Confident Data Scientist Program.

This contains the framework that my other clients used.

And the first 5 people will get a special deal.

So if you’re interested, reply confident data scientist and let’s talk.
