How I Got My Dream Data Science Job
Hey mate,
3 months ago I was trapped in a Data Science job that had me counting down the seconds until 5pm every day.
Today?
I work at a $1bn Tech company.
I’m earning 25% more (while doing more enjoyable work).
And I’ve just got back from our annual (complementary) trip to South Africa.
What changed?
Well… here’s the 3 things you need to know about landing your dream Data Science job (even if you work a busy 9-5):
1) Be Fussy
Most aspiring Data Scientists I talk to apply for hundreds of jobs in completely different industries.
LinkedIn Easy apply doesn’t actually make it easy to get a data science job.
In my job search I only applied for 10 different roles.
Instead of applying to something because it was easy just to upload a CV.
I asked myself if I’d be happy working until 9pm in that job.
(Something I’ve actually done in my new job).
Because if you answer yes to that question It shows
You agree with the company’s purpose
You’ll enjoy the job
You’ll work hard to prep for the interview.
So don’t apply because it’s easy, apply because it’s a job you’d love doing
2) Build Tailored Projects
I was never confident about finding a job.
In fact, I wrote down the wrong notice period when I applied to my current job.
What changed?
Tailored Projects.
They made the final interview a walk in the park.
Because I’d already smashed one of my projects.
It was a replica of the type of work I’d do in the job.
Interviews are to show you can do the job and I did that to perfection.
So when you build your portfolio.
Don’t build random projects unrelated to your dream job.
Think about your dream job and the industry you’d want to work in first.
Then build projects which solve problems which are important in that industry.
But it’s more than finding data related to that industry.
You have to plan a project that solves a burning problem your dream company has.
One of my clients wanted to work in healthcare and initially proposed analysing hospitalisation rates in Africa.
But that’s not relevant to businesses in the UK and US.
After thinking about his dream job in more detail, we decided on another project:
Scraping Social media to analyse hospital satisfaction rates.
Then once you’ve planned it, you need to execute it to perfection.
And know how to present it.
3) Stalk people
You want a quick-fix to your job search.
But it doesn’t work like that.
When you get an interview, you need to go in knowing you’ve done everything you can to succeed.
Else that nasty friend called doubt starts to creep in.
Practice answers to questions so much you accidently blurt out a successful project you worked on when your friend asks how your day was.
Research your interviewers on LinkedIn to see if you have anything in common with them.
If you do, bring this up in the interview – it makes it feel like you’re friends and the discussion becomes relaxed.
For example, if I was interviewing you and you also speak Italian – mention it!

So prepare for interviews like your life depends on it
That’s how I landed my Dream Data Science Job.
So remember, if you want to land your dream Data Science Job:
1. Be fussy – only apply for jobs you really want
2. Build Tailored Projects – Work on projects that match the work you’d do
3. Stalk people – Prepare hard for interviews & research your interviewers
P.S.
If you're looking to get your first data science or data analyst job.
Or upgrade to higher paying, more exciting job in data.
I'm opening my program, The Confident Data Scientist on the 1st August.
It's first come first serve - and only $300 to get started (for the first 3 people).
Clients are guaranteed to make at least $10,000 more in their new job (I vet prospects to make sure I can help them)
I open the doors 24 hours early for waitlist members though.
If you'd like to join the waitlist, reply to this email saying "Waitlist" and I'll shoot you the details a day before I open it publicly."
