Midnight Sweats

Don't Let This Give You Nightmares

The greenness of the turf penetrated my eyes as I stepped into our caged arena.

I wasn’t going to war, I was just playing 5-a-side football with my friends. Although it can get feisty…

Anyway, this Tuesday was different.

I’d just told my friends I’d applied for a new job.

I told myself it was because the projects were boring and I didn’t have any room to grow.

I didn’t know it yet but there was also another reason.

Let’s take a Japanese bullet-train back to today.

I didn’t think much when my boss asked to catch-up before I left the office.

Although it was strange he booked a meeting room for such an informal chat.

But once again I was wrong.

He dropped a Hiroshima sized bombshell and told me he was leaving.

I couldn’t process it.

I woke up panicking in the middle of the night unsure what was going to happen.

We worked well together and he knew how to have a laugh.

He challenged me.

And sure, we had our differences.

But I knew he cared about me, and if he gave me feedback it was for my own good.

So I could grow.

Looking back, I realise I couldn’t say the same for all my colleagues at my old job.

They weren’t bad people - we just didn’t click.

Of course, the projects you work on has a massive effect on enjoying your job.

But so does who you’re doing it with.

So if you’re stuck in a job where you’d rather watch paint dry than feign interest in how Sarah’s weekend was, fear not -something better lies ahead for you.

Happy Thursday.

Now I’m off to spam the British Sunshine.
