The Jobs You Shouldn't Apply To
When you’re deep into a job search.
It’s easy to think you’d be happy with ‘any data job’.
So you apply for anything you might be suited to.
That’s what my client Dan did.
He’s passionate about getting a Data Science role.
A recruiter messaged him about a software engineering role.
Dan thought it might be worth applying to as he’d built some data pipelines before.
To be fair to him, it seemed like he was smashing the interview process.
He showed himself as someone who could do the job.
And got through 3 rounds of interviews.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get any further.
The hiring manager said they wanted someone with more software experience.
And whilst you can upskill during an interview process, like if you need to revise some SQL window functions you’re not familiar with.
But sometimes you need to cut your losses.
And accept you shouldn’t apply.
Trust me, when you get rejected after going through multiple interviews.
You want to hide under a rock, cry yourself to sleep and never come out.
It’s just not worth the effort.
Another recruiter just messaged him with a similar role.
He’s ignoring it - and rightly so.
Instead, he’s focusing on identifying his dream companies.
So don’t apply for any role you might be suited to (even if a recruiter tells you to).
Only apply to jobs matching your dream job spec.
P.S.
I’ve just filled the remaining spots for my mentorship program The Confident Data Scientist.
It’s all geared to helping you find your dream data science (or analysis) job.
