How To Get Your First Interview

Good Morning Data Professionals!

Struggling with your job search?

I’m here to help.

My client just got his first interview, 4 weeks after we started working together.

And as soon as it finished, he got invited to speak to a company director.

Here’s how we did it.

1) Clear Plan

Most data pros spam applications to every job which looks mildly interesting.

Also known as the ‘spray and pray approach’.

Not so with my client.

We clearly defined the type of job he was interested (data analyst) and the industries he was most interested in (e.g., healthcare).

This means he can make fewer, higher-quality applications to data analyst roles in those industries.

2) Multi - Channel Approach

To increase the chance of our application being seen, my client applied via

  • The company website

  • LinkedIn

  • Email

For him, LinkedIn was the platform he got spotted by the hiring manager.

But I’ve also had other clients get interviews straight from ‘cold applications’ on the company website.

3) Prepare Accordingly

It can be easy to get an interview and prepare answers to every question possible.

And whilst it’s good to work hard, we also need to work smart.

For a first-round interview, we prepped answers to questions which would give the interviewer and overview of his achievements.

As we go deeper into the process and talk to more senior people, like the director, we’ll have to prep slightly differently.

For example, we’ll focus more on how my client would approach the first 90 days in the new job.

So to conclude

  1. Make a clear plan

  2. Apply via multiple channels

  3. Prepare accordingly

That’s how to get (and succeed) in your first interview.

Let me know if you have any questions.

And happy Easter weeekend!

God Bless,

Albert
