How To Get More Data Science Interviews
Good Morning Data Scientists,
Struggling to get interviews for Data Science Jobs?
When you’re easy-applying to every job possible on LinkedIn, it’s hard to stand-out.
Today I’m going to outline 3 steps (beside resume optimisation) all my clients go through to get more interviews.
It’s worked for UK & US clients, and for different types of jobs - from Data Science to Data Analysis.
1. Positioning
What special skills or industry experience make you stand out compared to the other 100s of data scientists applying for jobs?
Are you an expert in NLP models?
Are you a wiz in certain cloud providers like AWS?
Do you have lots of experience in a certain industry?
For example, I’m currently working with a US-based client who’s done a lot of data science work in academia but wants to move to the private sector.
He just had a final round interview at an education-related start-up.
It was easy for him to get a first interview because of his previous experience, and then we ensured he sold himself properly.
2. Cover Letters
There’s two parts to getting a job:
A) Showing you can add value
B) Showing you’re keen for the role.
Easy-applying on LinkedIn shows to the company you’re not willing to put in any effort.
A simple cover letter (which doesn’t take long to write) shows you actually care about the role you’re applying for.
In terms of the content in the cover letter, you should touch on both adding value and showing you’re keen.
3. LinkedIn
It’s the 21st century - any serious employer will look you up here.
This means you need a strong
Headline
Profile Picture
About section
Most people’s about section sounds like a regurgitated version of their CV.
But you need to add a human touch and make it more relatable, so people reading it can get a feel for what you’re like as a person.
As well as having a strong profile, you can also send ‘mini cover letters’ to relevant employees at the companies you’ve applied for.
This will increase your chances of getting noticed.
To recap, you want to
Position yourself strongly
Apply with cover letters
Have a strong LinkedIn
To get more interviews.
Which of these do you struggle with the most?
Let me know in the replies.
Happy Thursday and God Bless!
